It’s no long a news that all the Nigerian telecommunications have recently doubled the price of their data subscription as a results of the economic situation in Nigeria. However, while the telecoms are aiming to make more money to ease the cost of operation in Nigeria, their subscribers are also struggle to meet up with reality.
Paying more for internet data subscription will be a very big set back for many Nigerians who are already struggling to eat, pay house rent and children school fees. The new subscription is now the reality we all have to face. Though, the NCC and the Nigerian Labour congress (NLC) are still battling with the Nigerian Telecoms to revert to their old data price, so let wait as things unfold.
MTN VS Airtel Data Plans 2025
The reason I decided to compare the MTN and Airtel data plans is to help you with the current prices and as well help you to know the best data offer that you can enjoy. I will be comparing the data offers in a tabled list below, starting from:
- Daily data offers
- Weekly data offers
- Monthly data offers
- And other data packages.

While this page compares MTN and Airtel data plans as recently updated, I will be sharing a data plans that you can still buy cheaper at the end of this guide.
MTN Daily Date Plans VS Airtel Daily Data Plans

Looking at the table above, it seems that MTN has better and more offers to choose from but you can be the judge to know what you suits you.
MTN Weekly Data VS Airtel Weekly Data

If you look at the table you will see (IG/TT/YT), that is social media subscription plans, the IG represent Instagram, the TT should be TickTok, while the YT is YouTube. If you choose such package you might not be able to browse the internet with it because it was meant for social media apps

The monthly data plan above shows that Airtel is a bit more expensive compared to MTN and outside that, MTN offers more data options then Airtel. For now I think MTN is better until Airtel adjust their subscription prices. I will stop comparing the two network here but i will still show you how to buy cheap data in Nigeria.
Alternative Cheap Data plans available on MTN and Airtel
You have seen the current data price for MTN and Airtel so its time to show you how you can get cheap data that will not cost you more. However, data subscription in Nigeria is no longer as cheap as it used to be.
MTN Special USSD Code: *121#
Dialing *121# on MTN will show you the special data offer specifically designed for you, What you get is unique to you because they offer different data packages to different MTN users. To confirm it, I dial the code to know what MTN offers me. Below is the process on how you can get cheap data.
- Data4ME
- Combo4ME
- VAS4ME
- Smart DATA
The number 1 and 4 is where you need to go if you need cheap data offers but if you want both data and airtime that you can use to make calls then consider number 2 which Combo4ME and the last is the VAS44ME is only for those who which to play mtn games to win whatever they are offering. Let see what i can get from the Data4ME:
- 64GB for N11,000 (Month)
- 150GB for N20,000 (Month)
If you look at the offer you will still know that’s better than all the monthly data plans shared with you above.. However, Airtel still offers something amazing but its not working presently. I used to get 40GB for N5,000 and 20GB for N3,000 from Airtel until they decided to stop the promotional offer.

However, I am still hopeful that they will still bring the offer back, the promotional offer is called “Area Data Plan” only available when you dial the Airtel special USSD code which is *141# and not the regular data code *312#. Airtel has also stopped the code from working. Even the promotional offer called “My Offer” is also not working again.
I believe that things will soon normalize but for the main time let enjoy the MTN special data offer if you are a big user and can afford to pay the subscription fee.
