Having an MTN data bundle renew unexpectedly can be frustrating, especially when you have just recharged your line for calls or another purpose. If auto renewal is active, MTN may use your available airtime to purchase the same bundle again when it expires.
The code to cancel auto renewal on MTN is:
Send NO followed by your bundle code to 312.
For example, if the activation code for your data plan is 110, send:
NO110 to 312
Do not leave a space between NO and the bundle code. After sending the message, MTN should confirm that auto renewal has been cancelled.
The exact cancellation keyword depends on the bundle you subscribed to. Some social, Pulse, mPulse and XtraValue bundles use slightly different keywords. I will explain how to identify the right code, stop data renewal through the myMTN NG app, cancel unwanted subscriptions with *305#, and fix common cancellation problems.
What Is the Code to Cancel Auto Renewal on MTN?
For a regular MTN data bundle, use the following format:
| Action | Code |
|---|---|
| Cancel data auto renewal | Send NO + bundle code to 312 |
| Example for bundle code 110 | Send NO110 to 312 |
| Manage value-added services | Dial *305# |
| Contact MTN customer care | Dial 300 |
MTN confirms that customers can stop data bundle auto renewal by sending NO followed by the applicable bundle code to 312. The myMTN NG app can also be used to turn auto renewal on or off. MTN Nigeria’s data bundle information explains the current cancellation format.
There is no single SMS such as STOP or NO that cancels every regular MTN data bundle. You normally need to add the activation code of the particular bundle you want to stop.
How to Cancel MTN Data Auto Renewal by SMS
SMS is one of the simplest ways to cancel MTN data auto renewal because it does not require an internet connection or smartphone.
Follow these steps:
- Open the Messages app on your phone.
- Tap the option to create a new message.
- Type
NOfollowed immediately by the activation code of your bundle. - Send the message to
312. - Wait for a confirmation message from MTN.
For example, suppose your bundle was activated by sending 110 to 312. The cancellation message would be:
NO110
Send it to:
312
The complete instruction is therefore:
Send NO110 to 312
Make sure you send the message from the MTN line on which the data bundle is active. If your phone contains two SIM cards, confirm that the MTN SIM is selected before sending the SMS.
MTN Auto Renewal Cancellation Codes for Popular Data Plans
The table below shows how the cancellation format works with some current MTN monthly data bundle codes.
| Data bundle | Activation code | Auto renewal cancellation |
|---|---|---|
| 2GB monthly plan | 106 | Send NO106 to 312 |
| 2.7GB monthly plan | 130 | Send NO130 to 312 |
| 3.5GB monthly plan | 131 | Send NO131 to 312 |
| 7GB monthly plan | 110 | Send NO110 to 312 |
| 10GB monthly plan | 147 | Send NO147 to 312 |
| 12.5GB monthly plan | 148 | Send NO148 to 312 |
| 16.5GB monthly plan | 107 | Send NO107 to 312 |
| 18.6GB Always-On plan | 162 | Send NO162 to 312 |
| 20GB monthly plan | 116 | Send NO116 to 312 |
| 25GB monthly plan | 153 | Send NO153 to 312 |
| 36GB monthly plan | 117 | Send NO117 to 312 |
| 45GB Always-On plan | 163 | Send NO163 to 312 |
These codes can change when MTN updates its data plans. I recommend confirming the activation code in the subscription message you received or checking the current bundle details before sending the cancellation request. MTN publishes the available activation keywords on its official data plans page.
It is also important not to confuse the 3.5GB plan’s bundle code 131 with MTN’s former data shortcode. Although 131 can appear inside a cancellation keyword such as NO131, the message must now be sent to 312.
How to Find Your MTN Bundle Code
The cancellation process becomes more difficult when you know your bundle is renewing but cannot remember its activation code. Here are the most reliable ways to find it.
Check the Original Subscription Message
Search your SMS inbox for the message MTN sent when the data plan was activated. The message may contain the bundle name, validity period, expiry date and renewal information.
Also check recent renewal reminder messages. MTN may include the opt-out keyword in the notification sent before the bundle renews.
Check Your Data Balance and Bundle Details
Dial:
*323*4#
You can also dial:
*310#
These codes can help you check your available balance and bundle validity. You can find a more detailed explanation in my article on how to check data balance on MTN.
Knowing the bundle size and validity makes it easier to match the plan with its activation code.
Check the myMTN NG App
Open the myMTN NG app and view your active subscriptions. The app should display the data plans currently connected to your number. You can then select the affected plan and turn off auto renewal without entering its SMS code.
Contact MTN Customer Care
If you still cannot identify the bundle, dial 300 from your MTN line and ask the customer care representative to check your active renewable subscriptions.
You can also contact MTN through Zigi on WhatsApp using 09033000001. These are current contact options listed by MTN Nigeria customer support.
How to Cancel MTN Auto Renewal Using the myMTN NG App
The myMTN NG app is the better option when you have several bundles or cannot remember the correct SMS keyword.
To turn off auto renewal through the app:
- Open the myMTN NG app.
- Sign in with the MTN number that owns the subscription.
- Tap Manage Subscription.
- Select the active data bundle.
- Locate the auto renewal option.
- Turn the auto renewal toggle off.
- Check that the bundle now shows as a one-off subscription.
MTN’s data auto renewal page confirms that customers can select an active bundle under Manage Subscription and switch auto renewal on or off.
If the bundle is not visible immediately, refresh the app or close and reopen it. You may also need to update the app from your phone’s app store.
How to Cancel Auto Renewal for MTN Social Bundles
MTN social bundles do not all follow the regular NO plus bundle-code format. They have specific opt-out keywords that must be sent to 312.
Here are some examples:
| Social bundle | Cancellation keyword |
|---|---|
| WhatsApp daily bundle | Send STOPWAD to 312 |
| Facebook daily bundle | Send STOPFBD to 312 |
| TikTok daily bundle | Send NOTBD to 312 |
| WhatsApp weekly bundle | Send STOPWAW to 312 |
| Facebook weekly bundle | Send STOPFBW to 312 |
| Ayoba weekly bundle | Send NOABW to 312 |
| TikTok weekly bundle | Send NOTBW to 312 |
| WhatsApp monthly bundle | Send STOPWAM to 312 |
| Facebook monthly bundle | Send STOPFBM to 312 |
These keywords are taken from MTN Nigeria’s current social bundle cancellation table.
If you subscribed to a different social bundle, check the subscription message for its exact opt-out keyword. Sending only STOP to 312 may not identify the particular social bundle you want to cancel.
How to Cancel MTN Pulse Bundle Auto Renewal
Some MTN Pulse bundles use special cancellation keywords.
For the Pulse special data bundles:
| Pulse bundle | Cancellation code |
|---|---|
| 750MB Pulse special bundle | Send NOP300 to 312 |
| 1.2GB Pulse special bundle | Send NOP500 to 312 |
| 1GB Pulse Stream bundle | Send NOINSTD2 to 312 |
For the Pulse Stream bundle, you can also dial:
*406*4*4#
Select the option to manage the Pulse Stream bundle and cancel auto renewal.
Because Pulse offers can change, check the activation message if the codes above do not match your subscription.
How to Cancel mPulse Bundle Auto Renewal
MTN mPulse educational bundles may use 344 instead of 312.
The general cancellation format is:
Send NO followed by the mPulse bundle keyword to 344.
For example, to stop auto renewal of the educational bundle with code 350, send:
NO350 to 344
This is different from the cancellation process for regular MTN data plans, so confirm that the subscription is an mPulse bundle before using the 344 shortcode.
How to Cancel XtraValue Auto Renewal on MTN
XtraValue bundles combine data, airtime or call benefits. To cancel XtraValue auto renewal, send NO followed by the bundle keyword to 312.
For example, MTN gives the following cancellation instruction for XtraData 2500:
Send NOD2500 to 312
After cancellation, the current XtraValue bundle can remain available until its validity ends, but MTN should not purchase the same bundle automatically again.
Be careful if you have another active data plan or subscription. Stopping XtraValue does not automatically cancel every other renewable service on the line.
How to Cancel Unwanted MTN Subscriptions With *305#
If airtime is disappearing but you cannot find an active data plan, the deduction may be coming from a value-added service rather than data auto renewal.
Value-added services can include entertainment, gaming, music, news, football updates and similar paid subscriptions.
To check and cancel these services:
- Dial
*305#from your MTN line. - Select the option to view active services.
- Choose the subscription you want to remove.
- Select the option to deactivate or delete it.
- Confirm your request.
- Wait for MTN’s confirmation message.
You can remove one service without cancelling all the others. MTN’s official *305# menu information confirms that customers can view and deactivate individual value-added services or delete all active services.
The *305# code is mainly for value-added services. For regular data bundle auto renewal, use the appropriate SMS keyword or the myMTN NG app.
How to Know If MTN Auto Renewal Has Been Cancelled
Do not assume the cancellation was successful simply because the message left your phone. Look for a confirmation message from MTN.
The confirmation should indicate that auto renewal has been stopped, deactivated or changed to a one-off purchase.
You can also confirm through the myMTN NG app:
- Open Manage Subscription.
- Select the affected bundle.
- Check the auto renewal setting.
- Make sure the toggle is off.
Keep the confirmation SMS until the bundle expires. It can be useful if the plan renews again and you need to report the deduction to customer care.
What Happens After Cancelling MTN Auto Renewal?
Cancelling auto renewal does not normally remove the data you already purchased. It stops MTN from automatically buying another copy of the bundle when the current one expires.
You should still be able to use the remaining data until its expiry date. However, any unused data may expire if you do not buy another eligible bundle within the applicable rollover period.
If you want to preserve unused data, read my explanation of how to roll over unused data on MTN before the current plan expires.
Cancellation also does not produce an automatic refund. If the bundle has already renewed and airtime has been deducted, stopping auto renewal prevents the next renewal but does not reverse the completed purchase.
Auto Renewal, Unwanted Subscriptions and PAYG Browsing Are Different
These three services can all consume airtime, but they are not cancelled in the same way.
Data Auto Renewal
This purchases another data bundle when the current plan expires or meets its renewal conditions.
Use:
NO + bundle code to 312
Value-Added Service Subscription
This covers paid entertainment, music, news, games and similar services.
Use:
Dial *305#
Pay-As-You-Go Browsing
PAYG browsing allows MTN to charge data usage directly from your airtime after your bundle is exhausted. It is not the same as data auto renewal.
To opt out of PAYG browsing, dial:
*312*201#
Alternatively, send:
SUSPEND to 312
If airtime continues to reduce after you cancel auto renewal, check whether PAYG browsing or another paid service is active.
Why the MTN Auto Renewal Cancellation Code May Not Work
Several problems can prevent the cancellation request from going through.
You Sent the Message to 131
131 was previously used for MTN data services, but the current unified shortcode is 312.
Send the cancellation keyword to 312.
You Sent Only NO
For most regular data plans, sending only NO does not tell MTN which bundle you want to stop.
Add the bundle code. For example:
NO110 to 312
You Added a Space
The normal format is NO immediately followed by the bundle code.
Correct:
NO110
Incorrect:
NO 110
You Used the Wrong Bundle Code
Different plans can have different activation codes even when they have similar validity periods. Check the original subscription message, myMTN NG app or MTN’s current data plan list.
The Subscription Is a Social or Special Bundle
Social bundles, Pulse offers, mPulse plans and XtraValue bundles may use special opt-out keywords. A regular keyword such as NO110 will not cancel a WhatsApp, Pulse or mPulse subscription.
You Sent the Message From the Wrong SIM
On a dual-SIM phone, make sure the SMS is sent from the affected MTN number.
MTN Has Not Sent a Confirmation
Network delays can affect the request. Wait a few minutes and try again. If no confirmation arrives, use the myMTN NG app or contact customer care by dialling 300.
The Bundle Already Renewed
If MTN completed the renewal before receiving your cancellation request, the newly purchased bundle may remain active. The cancellation should apply to the next renewal.
Contact MTN customer care if you believe the renewal occurred after you had already received a successful cancellation confirmation.
How to Prevent Auto Renewal When Buying Another MTN Bundle
When purchasing a new bundle, MTN may ask you to choose between auto renewal and one-off purchase.
Select:
One-off purchase
A one-off bundle should expire without automatically buying another bundle. This option is useful when you do not want MTN to deduct the bundle price from future airtime recharges.
Before purchasing another plan, you can check my article on the code to buy data on MTN to see the available subscription methods.
Also read every confirmation screen carefully. Avoid selecting auto renewal simply because it appears as the first option.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the code to stop MTN data auto renewal?
Send NO followed by your bundle activation code to 312. For example, send NO110 to 312 to stop renewal of the bundle with activation code 110.
Can I cancel MTN auto renewal with *312#?
*312# is the main MTN data menu, but the officially stated cancellation method for regular bundles is to send NO plus the applicable bundle code to 312 or switch off auto renewal in the myMTN NG app.
Can I send STOP to 312?
Sending only STOP may not cancel a regular data plan. Most regular bundles require NO followed by the bundle code. Some social bundles use a longer STOP keyword, such as STOPWAD or STOPFBD.
Can I cancel all MTN subscriptions at once?
Dial *305# to check and remove value-added services. However, data plans and special bundles may still require their individual cancellation keywords.
Will cancelling auto renewal delete my remaining data?
Cancelling auto renewal should stop the next automatic purchase. It does not normally delete the active data bundle immediately. You can continue using it until it expires or is exhausted.
Will MTN refund my airtime after I cancel auto renewal?
Cancelling auto renewal does not automatically refund a bundle that has already been purchased. If you believe MTN renewed the plan after a confirmed cancellation, call 300 and provide the cancellation and deduction messages.
Can I cancel MTN auto renewal without data?
Yes. Send the appropriate cancellation keyword by SMS to 312. An internet connection is not required.
How can I stop MTN from taking airtime after my data finishes?
Cancelling auto renewal may not be enough if PAYG browsing is active. Dial *312*201# or send SUSPEND to 312 to opt out of browsing from your airtime.
Why is MTN still deducting my airtime after cancelling auto renewal?
Another data plan, social bundle, value-added service or PAYG browsing setting may be active. Dial *305#, check Manage Subscription in the myMTN NG app and review recent deduction messages.
Can I activate auto renewal again later?
Yes. MTN generally allows customers to reactivate renewal by sending R followed by the bundle code to 312. You can also turn it on from the Manage Subscription section of the myMTN NG app.
The safest way to stop MTN data auto renewal is to identify the exact bundle and send NO followed by its activation code to 312. After sending the message, always wait for confirmation and check the myMTN NG app if you have more than one active subscription.
