MTN Tariff Plans and Migration Codes (Best Call Rate offer)

JoyceBy JoyceJuly 13, 2026Updated:July 13, 2026No Comments23 Mins Read
MTN Tariff Plans and Migration Codes (Best Call Rate offer)

MTN tariff plans determine how much you pay for calls, the special data bundles available to you, the rewards you can earn and the services you can access. Choosing the right plan can reduce your call or data expenses, but the best option depends on whether you make long calls, consume more data, need a combined bundle or prefer a postpaid account.

The current MTN tariff plans are MTN BetaGist, MTN Pulse, MTN mPulse, MTN XtraValue and MTN XtraSpecial Postpaid.

One important change is that MTN BetaTalk is no longer listed among the current plans on MTN Nigeria’s website. MTN’s BetaGist information discusses BetaTalk customers being migrated to BetaGist, indicating that BetaGist is now the relevant replacement. This means articles that still present BetaTalk as an available plan may contain outdated information.

How MTN Tariff Plans Work

A tariff plan controls the standard rates charged when you use airtime directly for calls, SMS or pay-as-you-go data. It may also unlock special bundles, rewards and discounted services.

A tariff plan is different from a data bundle. Migrating to MTN Pulse, for example, does not automatically give you an active monthly data plan. It changes your tariff and makes you eligible for Pulse-specific offers.

Similarly, XtraValue is a tariff plan built around paid bundles. You must purchase an XtraTalk, XtraData or Value Data bundle to receive the main benefits.

I recommend checking these four things before migrating:

  • The standard call rate.
  • Whether the plan requires a special bundle.
  • The validity of any reward or bonus.
  • What you may lose when you migrate out.

1. MTN BetaGist

MTN BetaGist is a prepaid tariff plan that charges a flat rate of 33 kobo per second for national calls to all networks in Nigeria.

The standard rate is equivalent to:

₦19.80 per minute

The main attraction is its Get-Back minutes reward. After making six minutes of qualifying outgoing local calls, you receive three additional minutes for local calls.

MTN describes BetaGist as the default tariff plan for new customers who do not choose another plan during SIM registration. MTN’s BetaGist page lists the flat 33 kobo per second rate and the three-minute Get-Back reward.

MTN BetaGist Migration Code

To migrate to MTN BetaGist, use any of these methods:

  • Dial *405#.
  • Dial *123*2*1#.
  • Send BG to 312.
  • Select BetaGist from the myMTN NG app.
  • Use Zigi, MTN’s virtual assistant.

After completing the migration, wait for a confirmation message from MTN.

MTN BetaGist Benefits

BetaGist provides the following benefits:

  • Flat calls to all Nigerian networks at 33 kobo per second.
  • Three Get-Back minutes after six minutes of qualifying calls.
  • No daily access fee.
  • Access to BetaMix voice and data bundles.
  • Access to regular MTN data and social bundles.
  • Eligibility to use services such as XtraTime, MTN Share and GistPlus, subject to their conditions.
  • Get-Back rewards on qualifying calls made with borrowed XtraTime airtime.

How BetaGist Get-Back Minutes Work

You do not need to activate the Get-Back offer separately. Once you are on BetaGist, MTN automatically tracks qualifying calls from your main airtime or XtraTime account.

For every six minutes of outgoing local calls, MTN awards three minutes for additional local calls.

The six minutes can come from one long call or several shorter calls. Both MTN-to-MTN and MTN-to-other-network calls qualify.

The free minutes:

  • Are valid for two days.
  • Can only be used for local calls in Nigeria.
  • Cannot be transferred.
  • Cannot be rolled over after expiration.
  • Are used automatically for your next eligible local call.
  • Are lost if you migrate out of BetaGist.
  • Can accumulate up to 6,000 minutes within 30 days.

International calls, roaming calls, incoming calls and calls charged from bonus accounts do not qualify.

You can check your Get-Back balance by dialling:

*310*5#

Effective BetaGist Call Rate

The normal BetaGist rate is ₦19.80 per minute. However, if you make six paid minutes and fully use the three free minutes, you receive nine minutes of talk time for the cost of six minutes.

The calculation is:

  • Six paid minutes cost ₦118.80.
  • Total talk time after the reward is nine minutes.
  • ₦118.80 divided by nine minutes equals ₦13.20 per minute.

This means the effective rate can work out to about 22 kobo per second when you earn and use all your Get-Back minutes before they expire.

This is my calculation based on MTN’s published rate and reward structure. It makes BetaGist competitive for people who make regular local calls, but the benefit is reduced if the free minutes expire unused.

BetaGist BetaMix Bundles

BetaGist customers can purchase short voice and data bundles.

BetaMix bundlePriceBenefitValidityActivation
BetaMix Mini₦5040MB and 1 call minute1 daySend BT1 to 312 or dial *312*28#
BetaMix Max₦100100MB and 2 call minutes1 daySend BT2 to 312 or dial *312*29#

Buying a BetaMix bundle from another eligible prepaid tariff can migrate the line to BetaGist after the customer approves the migration.

BetaGist Migration Charge

MTN states that the first migration to BetaGist within 30 days is free. A subsequent migration within the same period may attract a ₦150 fee.

Who Should Use MTN BetaGist?

BetaGist is suitable for people who make frequent local calls and can use their Get-Back minutes within the two-day validity period.

It may not be the best choice for someone who makes only occasional short calls because the base rate of 33 kobo per second is higher than the regular Pulse call rate.

2. MTN Pulse

MTN Pulse is a prepaid tariff plan that offers national calls to all Nigerian networks at 23 kobo per second.

The call rate is equivalent to:

₦13.80 per minute

Pulse also provides special data bundles, Pulse Points, Nightlife bundles, streaming data and a discounted midnight call offer.

MTN Pulse Migration Code

To migrate to MTN Pulse:

  • Dial *406*1#.
  • Dial *123*2*2#.
  • Send 406 to 312.
  • Select MTN Pulse in the myMTN NG app.
  • Buy an eligible Pulse Special, Nightlife or Stream bundle and approve the migration.

All MTN prepaid customers are eligible to migrate to Pulse.

MTN Pulse Benefits

MTN Pulse offers:

  • Flat calls to all Nigerian networks at 23 kobo per second.
  • No daily access fee.
  • Special short-term data bundles.
  • Pulse Points on selected data purchases and eligible activities.
  • Pulse Nightlife data.
  • Pulse Stream bundles for selected streaming and social platforms.
  • A discounted midnight call offer for qualifying customers.
  • Access to regular MTN data and social bundles.

The current MTN Pulse page confirms the flat 23 kobo per second call rate and the available migration methods.

The social bolt-on is capped at 100MB and is intended for Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. The one-hour period starts when an eligible application is opened.

Pulse Stream data covers selected platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Spotify, Snapchat, Audiomack, Boomplay and similar services.

Pulse Nightlife data is available between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. It does not automatically renew, and unused data is cleared after the browsing period.

MTN Pulse Points

Pulse Points can be earned from selected data-plan activations and certain qualifying activities.

The points can be used to buy:

  • Daily data plans.
  • Weekly data plans.
  • Monthly data plans.
  • Pulse Stream bundles.
  • Pulse Nightlife bundles.

You can pay with Pulse Points only or combine points with airtime.

To check or redeem Pulse Points, dial:

*406*7#

Pulse Points cannot be transferred to another person. They are also lost when you migrate out of MTN Pulse, so I recommend using available points before switching plans.

MTN Pulse Midnight Call Offer

Eligible Pulse customers can make local calls at 13 kobo per second between 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.

To qualify during the day, you must meet at least one of these requirements:

  • Spend ₦100 or more on local calls.
  • Spend ₦500 or more on a data bundle subscription.

If you do not qualify, calls during the midnight period remain at the standard Pulse rate of 23 kobo per second.

You can check progress towards the daily requirement by sending Usage to 406 or dialling *406#.

MTN Pulse Migration Charge

Your first migration within 30 days is free. A subsequent migration within 30 days may attract a ₦102 fee.

MTN states that migration is free when it happens through the purchase of an eligible Pulse-exclusive bundle.

Who Should Use MTN Pulse?

MTN Pulse is suitable for:

  • Customers who want a predictable local call rate.
  • People who buy data frequently.
  • Social media and streaming users.
  • Night-time internet users.
  • Customers who can benefit from Pulse Points.

For most regular prepaid users, Pulse is one of the most balanced options because it combines a relatively low call rate with several data benefits.

3. MTN mPulse

MTN mPulse is a prepaid tariff plan designed for children and teenagers between 9 and 15 years old.

It offers national calls at 20 kobo per second, equivalent to:

₦12 per minute

The plan also includes education bundles, a birthday airtime reward, parent-and-child linking and other age-focused benefits.

MTN mPulse Migration Code

To migrate to MTN mPulse:

  • Dial *344*1#.
  • Dial *123*2*3#.
  • Send mPulse to 344.
  • Select mPulse through the myMTN NG app.

MTN states that mPulse is intended for customers within the eligible age range.

MTN mPulse Benefits

mPulse customers can receive:

  • Calls to all Nigerian networks at 20 kobo per second.
  • National SMS at ₦6.
  • Education bundles for selected educational websites and platforms.
  • ₦200 birthday airtime reward.
  • Free 30MB on the first visit to the mPulse website.
  • WhatsApp data bonus on the first recharge of the month.
  • Parent-and-child airtime and data gifting.
  • Access to educational competitions and content.

The official mPulse information states that the plan is intended for customers aged 9 to 15 and provides calls at 20 kobo per second.

MTN mPulse Education Bundles

4GB education bundle₦60030 daysSend 353 to 344 or use *344#

These are education bundles rather than unrestricted internet plans. They are intended for selected educational websites and platforms.

Customers who need unrestricted browsing should buy a regular MTN data plan separately.

mPulse Birthday Reward

Eligible mPulse customers can receive ₦200 airtime on their registered birthday.

To qualify:

  • The customer must be within the eligible age.
  • The birth date must be registered through the mPulse menu or supported platform.
  • The birthday details should be submitted at least 30 days before the birthday.
  • The reward is credited automatically on the registered date.

The reward can be used for national calls, national SMS and pay-as-you-go data. It is valid until 11:59 p.m. on the day following the birthday.

mPulse Parent-and-Child Linking

The Parent-Child feature allows an MTN number to link with an eligible child’s mPulse line and provide airtime or data.

A parent can link up to six child numbers, while a child can be linked to a maximum of two parent numbers.

To access the feature, dial:

*344#

Select the Parent-Child Link option and follow the instructions.

MTN mPulse Migration Charge

The first migration within 30 days is free. Subsequent migrations within the same period may attract a ₦102 fee.

Who Should Use MTN mPulse?

mPulse is best for children and teenagers who need affordable calls, education data and parental support.

Although its 20 kobo per second call rate is attractive, adults should not select it simply for cheap calls because the plan is designed for customers within the stated age bracket.

4. MTN XtraValue

MTN XtraValue is a prepaid tariff plan built around bundles containing data, voice minutes and SMS.

Unlike Pulse or BetaGist, XtraValue does not mainly depend on a standard pay-as-you-go call rate. Its value comes from choosing and purchasing an XtraValue bundle.

There are three categories:

  • XtraTalk: More voice minutes and less data.
  • XtraData: More data and fewer voice minutes.
  • Value Data: Data-only bundles.

MTN XtraValue Migration Code

To move to MTN XtraValue:

  1. Dial *312*5#.
  2. Select the preferred XtraValue bundle.
  3. Review the price and benefits.
  4. Approve the migration and bundle purchase.
  5. Wait for MTN’s confirmation.

You can also send the relevant bundle keyword to 312, buy through myMTN NG, use Zigi or purchase through the MTN eShop.

See also  How to Borrow Airtime from 9Mobile

Successful purchase of an XtraValue bundle migrates an eligible prepaid line to the XtraValue tariff plan. MTN states that only the bundle price is charged, with no separate migration fee. MTN XtraValue information lists the available categories and bundle keywords.

MTN XtraValue Benefits

XtraValue provides:

  • A choice between voice-focused and data-focused bundles.
  • National call minutes.
  • National SMS.
  • Data for browsing.
  • International call benefits on eligible bundles and destinations.
  • The ability to buy several XtraValue bundles.
  • Data sharing from eligible XtraTalk and XtraData bundles.
  • Selected roaming use on qualifying bundles.

The XtraTalk 5500 and XtraData 5500 bundles can provide eligible roaming benefits in the United States, Canada, India, Malaysia and China, although roaming depletion rates differ from local use.

Important XtraValue Auto-Renewal Warning

XtraValue bundles can be purchased as one-off or recurrent bundles.

If recurrent purchase is selected, the plan may renew when it expires or when the relevant bundle element is exhausted, provided sufficient airtime is available.

If you do not want another purchase, choose One-off during activation.

You can also use the instructions in my article on the code to cancel auto renewal on MTN to stop an active recurring bundle.

What Happens When You Leave XtraValue?

You can migrate out of XtraValue while a bundle is active, but MTN states that you will no longer be able to use the remaining XtraValue balance on the new tariff plan.

This makes it wise to use the available minutes, data and SMS before migrating.

Who Should Use MTN XtraValue?

XtraValue is suitable for people who want to control spending through a fixed bundle.

Choose:

  • XtraTalk if calls are your priority.
  • XtraData if you use more internet data.
  • Value Data if you mainly need unrestricted data.

5. MTN XtraSpecial Postpaid

MTN XtraSpecial Postpaid is different from the other plans because it operates as a postpaid service.

Customers can use services within an approved credit limit and pay the bill according to the billing schedule.

The plan charges 20 kobo per second for local calls to all Nigerian networks from the first second. This is equivalent to:

₦12 per minute

It does not attract a daily or monthly access fee.

MTN XtraSpecial Postpaid Migration Code

Existing MTN prepaid customers can dial:

*409#

They will be required to enter their BVN and complete the migration process.

New customers must visit an MTN service outlet with their NIN, complete the activation form and pay a one-time ₦2,000 service activation fee.

This is more involved than switching between two prepaid plans because the customer is moving to a billed postpaid account.

MTN XtraSpecial Postpaid Benefits

The plan includes:

  • Calls to all Nigerian networks at 20 kobo per second.
  • National SMS at ₦4.
  • No daily or monthly access fee.
  • Discounted international calls to selected destinations.
  • Special postpaid data bundles.
  • An initial ₦2,000 credit limit for eligible new activations and migrations.
  • Selected roaming and loyalty benefits.
  • A free Platinum number for qualifying in-store activations.

The MTN XtraSpecial Postpaid page confirms the 20 kobo per second local call rate and *409# activation process for existing prepaid customers.

XtraSpecial International Call Rates

The plan offers discounted international calls to selected operators in five countries.

International zoneRateDestinations
Zone 1₦31.20 per minuteCanada, India, Malaysia mobile numbers and most United States numbers
Zone 2₦62.40 per minuteChina and United States numbers in Alaska and the Virgin Islands

Other international destinations are charged at the applicable standard rate.

Important Postpaid Billing Information

The initial credit limit is not free airtime. It is an amount the customer can use and later pay for.

MTN’s regular XtraSpecial Postpaid billing cycle begins on the first day of the month, and the bill is generally due by the fifth day of the next cycle. A line can be suspended if the outstanding bill is not paid.

Before migrating, make sure you are comfortable with receiving and settling a postpaid bill.

Who Should Use XtraSpecial Postpaid?

XtraSpecial Postpaid is suitable for:

  • Professionals who use their lines heavily.
  • Business owners who prefer monthly billing.
  • Customers who make regular international calls to eligible destinations.
  • Users who want a flat 20 kobo per second local call rate.
  • People who can manage a postpaid credit limit responsibly.

Which MTN Tariff Plan Is Best for Calls?

For most unrestricted prepaid customers, MTN Pulse provides the lowest straightforward pay-as-you-go rate at 23 kobo per second.

BetaGist charges 33 kobo per second, but its effective rate can fall to approximately 22 kobo per second when you earn and use every Get-Back minute.

See also  MTN Code to Remove Private Number on Android

This means:

  • Choose Pulse if you want a predictable low rate on every local call.
  • Choose BetaGist if you make enough calls to earn rewards and can use them before they expire.
  • Choose mPulse for an eligible child or teenager.
  • Consider XtraTalk if you prefer prepaid voice bundles.
  • Consider XtraSpecial Postpaid if you qualify and are comfortable with monthly billing.

Which MTN Tariff Plan Is Best for Data?

MTN Pulse is a strong choice for social media, short data bundles, streaming and Pulse Points.

XtraValue XtraData is more suitable when you want data, voice minutes and SMS together in a single package.

Value Data is better when your main priority is a fixed monthly data allowance.

mPulse is excellent for educational browsing, but its cheapest education bundles are restricted to selected educational websites and should not be treated as general-purpose data.

How to Check Your Current MTN Tariff Plan

Dial:

*123*1*2#

Your current tariff plan should appear on the screen or arrive through an SMS.

You can also check through the myMTN NG app:

  1. Open the app.
  2. Sign in with your MTN number.
  3. Look at the tariff name near your airtime and data balances.
  4. Tap the tariff name to view other available plans.

How to Migrate to an MTN Tariff Plan Through *123#

You can view the available prepaid plans by dialling:

*123*2#

Then:

  1. Select the tariff plan you want.
  2. Read the benefits and charges.
  3. Review any migration fee.
  4. Confirm the migration.
  5. Wait for MTN’s confirmation message.
  6. Dial *123*1*2# to verify your new plan.

Do not press the final confirmation button without reading the charge displayed on the screen.

Will MTN Charge Me for Changing Tariff Plans?

Your first eligible migration within 30 days is usually free on plans such as Pulse, BetaGist and mPulse.

Subsequent migrations within the same period may attract a fee. MTN currently lists:

  • Up to ₦150 for a subsequent BetaGist migration.
  • ₦102 for subsequent Pulse migration.
  • ₦102 for subsequent mPulse migration.

XtraValue migration does not have a separate migration charge, but you must pay for the selected XtraValue bundle.

MTN may update these charges, so the fee displayed before confirmation should be treated as the final amount for that transaction.

What Happens to Active Bonuses When You Migrate?

The result depends on the type of bonus or bundle.

  • BetaGist Get-Back minutes are lost when you migrate out.
  • Pulse Points are lost when you leave Pulse.
  • Pulse-exclusive activation bonuses may become unavailable after migration.
  • An active XtraValue balance cannot be used after migrating out of XtraValue.
  • An mPulse birthday reward cannot be used outside mPulse, although it may remain until its short validity expires.
  • Standard data bundles may follow different rules from tariff-specific bonuses.

I recommend using plan-specific rewards before migrating.

MTN Services Commonly Mistaken for Tariff Plans

Several MTN offers are sometimes listed as tariff plans even though they are bundles, recharge offers or payment services.

MTN GistPlus

GistPlus is a recharge bonus offer, not a separate tariff plan. Eligible customers recharge with *888*Recharge PIN# to receive promotional airtime.

You remain on your existing tariff plan while the GistPlus bonus is charged according to its own rates and validity.

MTN Sachet Bundles

Sachet Bundles are voice packages, not a standard tariff plan.

Customers can recharge with *886*Recharge PIN# or dial *887# to buy a voice bundle from their main airtime.

MTN Xtrabuy

Xtrabuy is a payment and top-up service. It recommends airtime and data purchases when a customer’s balance is low and allows payment through bank USSD, card or bank transfer.

It does not replace your existing tariff plan.

MTN Oyato

Oyato is a location-based voice and data bundle available to eligible customers in selected states. It is not a general tariff plan for every MTN customer.

MTN XtraTime

XtraTime is MTN’s airtime borrowing service. Borrowing airtime does not automatically change your tariff plan.

Is MTN BetaTalk Still Available?

MTN BetaTalk is no longer listed among the current tariff plans on MTN Nigeria’s tariff pages. The current BetaGist FAQ specifically addresses BetaTalk and Yafun-Yafun customers being migrated to BetaGist.

Customers with an unused BetaTalk bonus may be allowed to use the remaining balance until it expires, but the current active plan becomes BetaGist.

This also means the previously prepared article on code to migrate to MTN BetaTalk should be reviewed and updated. Its search keyword can still be targeted, but the content should clearly explain that BetaTalk has been replaced and direct readers to BetaGist instead of giving an outdated migration instruction.

Which MTN plan has the cheapest call rate?

mPulse and XtraSpecial Postpaid charge 20 kobo per second, but mPulse is age-restricted and XtraSpecial is postpaid. For regular prepaid customers, Pulse charges 23 kobo per second, while BetaGist can have an effective rate of about 22 kobo per second when its reward is fully used.

Which MTN tariff plan gives a recharge bonus?

The current main tariff plans do not automatically provide the old BetaTalk-style recharge bonus. GistPlus is a separate recharge offer that can provide promotional airtime to eligible customers.

Can I migrate from one MTN plan to another?

Yes. Dial *123*2#, select the preferred plan and confirm. A migration fee may apply if you have already changed plans within the last 30 days.

Will I lose my data after migrating?

Standard data and plan-specific benefits are treated differently. Pulse Points, Get-Back minutes and XtraValue balances can be lost or become unavailable after migration. Check the type of balance before changing plans.

For a regular prepaid customer who wants affordable calls and useful data benefits, Pulse is the most balanced starting point. BetaGist becomes attractive for frequent callers who consistently earn and use their Get-Back minutes, while XtraValue is better when you prefer a fixed bundle containing calls and data.
